Joanna is a popular speaker and delivers around 70 lectures a year to many organisations including London Art Studies, Sotheby’s Institute, The Goldsmith’s Hall, Crystal Cruises and The International Jewellery London Show, Earls Court. She is also an accredited Arts Society (formerly NADFAS) lecturer.

The lectures are all illustrated with high resolution colour images which can be complimented by practical ‘workshops‘.
These events can either be conducted to a large audience or to small informal groups of private or corporate clients in the setting of a stately home, a private residence, a corporate boardroom, or museum.

VOID at London Design Festival 2019

THURSDAY 17 SEPTEMBER 2019, - COLLINS MUSIC HALL, LONDON

Joanna joined Gemfields, a world-leading supplier of responsibly-sourced coloured gemstones, as they invited visitors of London Design Festival to “become part of an immersive experience, travelling through a series of large-scale projections that showcase the expanded space inside gemstones and map the blurring boundaries between nature and design.” Gemfields.

Designer Dan Tobin Smith and creative studio The Experience Machine, in partnership with Gemfields, presented VOID: a multi-sensory spatial installation at Collins Music Hall, Islington, as part of London Design Festival 2019.

The installation featured incredible photographs of inclusions within Gemfields’ Mozambican rubies and Zambian emeralds, incorporated into moving image and accompanied by recordings and live performances by NYX, a female electronic drone choir.

Joanna led an intimate group walk around the VOID installation space with the designer, Dan Tobin Smith, to discuss inclusions and what makes gemstones unique, including the processes Tobin Smith used to capture their individuality.

The Art of the Parisian Fine Jewellery Houses

In Conjunction with Christie's Education - 12th-13th April 2018

A two-day masterclass in which we will journey through the history of illustrious Parisian jewellers. We will be discussing the iconic work of some of jewellery's most esteemed jewellery maisons, spending one day in London and one day in Paris to gain insights from the workshops themselves.

Following the morning lecture, participants will enjoy a delicious light lunch in the Christie's King Street boardroom. In the afternoon, participants will discuss behind-the-scenes life at a leading Bond Street atelier. This day will draw to a close with a champagne reception. On day two, participants will enjoy an exclusive trip to Paris to visit a selection of major Parisian jewellery houses.

Nelson's Chelengk: In Conversation at the Goldsmiths' Hall

Monday 5 march 2018, 6-8.30pm - the goldsmiths' company, the goldsmiths' hall, EC2V 6BN

One of the most iconic jewels in British history, Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson's Chelengk - a sparkling turban ornament presented to him by Sultan Selim III of Turkey - is also one of the most mysterious, having been stolen in 1951. However, in 2017, this jewel and Nelson's bicorn hat were recreated through the meticulous efforts of historian Martyn Downer, jeweller Philip Denyer and Lock & Co Hatters, as well as backing from jewellers Symbolic & Chase.

Joanna led an 'in conversation' discussion with Martyn, Philip and the Deputy Chairman of Lock & Co Hatters, Roger Stephenson, as we unearth the stories behind this much fabled jewel.

The replica jewel itself, along with some of Nelson's silver, will be on display for public viewing at Goldsmiths' Hall, Monday 12 - Thursday 22 March 2018 (weekdays only, excluding the middle Friday), 10am-4pm (free entry). Please contact the Goldsmiths' Company for further details.

Collect 2018: Patronage, the Collector and the Evolution of the Art Jewellery Market

The 14th edition of Collect, the International Art Fair for Contemporary Objects, returns to the Saatchi Gallery from 22-25 February 2018. As well as showcasing galleries and independent designer-makers from four continents, Collect will be hosting a series of talks. I will be chairing a panel discussion of collectors, makers and curators, in which we'll question how the role of the collector and the art jewellery market have developed.

Join me for an exclusive in conversation talk with Cartier, hosted by the Goldsmiths' Craft & Design Council (GC&DC), in which I'll be discussing the world of Cartier and their constant achievement of the highest levels of craftsmanship with two Cartier representatives. This talk celebrates the sixtieth year of a unique partnership between Cartier and GC&DC that rewards excellence in craftsmanship: the GC&DC's Jacques Cartier Memorial Award.
